New Methodology for Assessing Biodiversity Risks in Finance

How do ecosystem changes affect credit risk, investment and long-term portfolio stability?
These are questions that the banking and finance sector is increasingly asking as CSRD/ESRS and TNFD requirements grow. At the same time, standardized and scalable ways of measuring biodiversity at landscape level are often lacking.

Therefore, Metria is running a new research and development project funded by the Swedish National Space Agency, where we will develop methods for creating relevant and comparable landscape information over two years. By combining remote sensing, satellite data, AI and biodiversity expertise, we are developing.

The goal: Better assessments - less uncertainty

The obvious interpretation of the problem is that climate is putting pressure on biodiversity and affecting conditions for biodiversity, but we also see clear evidence of a reverse effect where well-functioning ecosystems and high biodiversity act as resilience to climate change. This is both in terms of lowering their impact, such as effective carbon sinks, but also in mitigating the effects of climate change by offering increased protection against extreme weather in some cases, such as mangrove forests near coasts.

An enhanced biodiversity index in the context of business systems

The project will enable banks and investors to:

    • Map impacts on ecosystems and track changes over time
    • Analyze nature-related risks in financial portfolios
    • Strengthen reporting under CSRD/ESRS and TNFD
    • Make more sustainable and data-driven business decisions

This is an area that Metria is actively working on in several industries, and which has recently been highlighted in external communications on nature-related risks (e.g. turn1search36).

We are looking for pilot companies in the banking and finance industry

We are now inviting stakeholders in the industry to participate as pilot companies and influence the design of the methodology. As a pilot you will get:

    • Early access to results
    • Opportunity to test methods adapted to your processes
    • Direct dialog with Metria's specialists

Do you want to be involved? Contact us and we will tell you more.
