Metria has mapped continuity forest based on remote sensing data

On behalf of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Metria has mapped continuity forest in the seven northern counties. A comprehensive mapping was done in 2015 with fully automated methods based mainly on remote sensing data (historical orthophotos, satellite data and laser data). Refinement of the 2015 mapping has subsequently been carried out in rounds during 2017-2022 because the presence of continuity forest is overestimated in the 2015 mapping.

The result of the mapping is open data, a useful knowledge base in the work to preserve and take into account valuable forests.

The 2015 mapping and subsequent specifications can be downloaded via the link below. There is also a merged layer with specified mapping or 2015 mapping where specification has not been carried out.

Definition of continuity forest by the Swedish Forest Agency 2011: Continuity forest is forest that has natural values whose existence is explained by the fact that there have been suitable forest environments and substrates in this particular forest or in its vicinity for a long time.
